Areca Palm (Dypsis lutescens)

Also known as the Butterfly Palm, Golden Cane Palm, or Yellow Palm, the Areca Palm is a popular ornamental plant known for its elegant, feathery fronds and air-purifying qualities.

Key Characteristics:

  • Growth Habit: Clustering palm with multiple smooth, yellow-green stems.
  • Height: Can grow up to 6–12 meters (20–40 feet) outdoors but typically reaches 1.5–3 meters (5–10 feet) indoors.
  • Leaves: Long, arching, feather-like fronds with numerous leaflets, giving it a lush, tropical appearance.
  • Flowers: Small yellow flowers emerge from beneath the leaves, followed by small, orange-yellow fruits.

Care Requirements:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light, but can tolerate some shade. Avoid direct sunlight, which may scorch the leaves.
  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, but do not let it sit in water. Allow the topsoil to dry slightly between watering.
  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity. Misting or using a humidifier can help indoors.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures (18–24°C / 65–75°F) and should be protected from cold drafts.
  • Soil: Well-draining, rich, loamy soil with good aeration.
  • Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every month during the growing season (spring and summer).
