Sweet Viburnum Dense Fence

Viburnum odoratissimum Dense Fence

Sweet Viburnum Dense Fence has finer leaves, higher density and red new growth. Great for Dense Hedge or Screen Grows to 3.5M x 2M.

Viburnum odoratissimum ‘Dense Fence’ is a cultivar of the species Viburnum odoratissimum, commonly known as Sweet Viburnum. The ‘Dense Fence’ variety is a particularly popular selection due to its compact, dense growth habit, making it an excellent choice for privacy screens, hedges, or as a formal landscaping element.

Key Features:

Appearance:

  • Growth Habit: This variety has a dense, bushy, upright growth habit, typically reaching a height of 6-10 feet (1.8-3 meters) with a similar width, making it ideal for privacy screening or as a hedge.
  • Leaves: The evergreen leaves are glossy, dark green, and leathery in texture, providing year-round visual appeal. They have a slightly leathery, smooth texture and a vibrant appearance.
  • Flowers: It produces clusters of small, creamy white flowers in the spring, which are subtly fragrant. While the flowers are relatively small, they create a visually appealing display.
  • Foliage Color: The glossy dark green leaves retain their color through most seasons, adding an element of lush greenery to your garden or landscape year-round.

Climate & Growing Conditions:

  1. Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. However, it does best with at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and flowering.
  2. Soil: Prefers well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil but is adaptable to a variety of soil types.
  3. Water: While drought-tolerant once established, it does best with regular watering, especially during dry periods. Ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged.
  4. Hardiness: Tolerates a wide range of climates. It is ideal for subtropical and warm temperate regions.

Care & Maintenance:

  • Pruning: Regular pruning is recommended to maintain its shape, especially if used as a hedge or fence. You can trim it back in late winter or early spring before new growth starts. Cut the plant back by about one-third to encourage dense foliage.
  • Fertilizing: Fertilizing with a balanced fertilizer in early spring can help boost growth, especially for young plants.
  • Pests/Diseases: It is generally pest-resistant but may occasionally suffer from aphids or scale. Fungal diseases like powdery mildew can occur, particularly in humid conditions, so ensure good air circulation around the plant.

Uses:

  • Privacy Hedge: One of the main uses of Viburnum odoratissimum ‘Dense Fence’ is as a dense, evergreen privacy hedge or screen. It provides year-round privacy and shelter due to its thick foliage.
  • Landscaping: This plant is also used as a border plant, foundation plant, or in mass plantings, adding structure and color to landscapes.
  • Pollinator-Friendly: Its fragrant flowers can attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it an excellent choice for a wildlife-friendly garden.

Additional Notes:

  • It’s a great option for hedges or fences, as the dense growth habit allows it to effectively block out neighbors or unsightly views.
  • While it is relatively easy to maintain, it does require consistent care and occasional trimming to keep it looking tidy and full.
