White Cedar

Melia azedarach

The White Cedar (Melia azedarach) is an Australian Native Tree, widely used as a street tree or in parks and gardens.

Melia azedarach, commonly known as White Cedar or the Chinaberry tree or Pride of India, is a deciduous tree native to parts of Asia and Australasia. It has been widely cultivated in temperate and subtropical regions around the world.

This tree is known for its attractive, fragrant purple or lilac-colored flowers that bloom in clusters during the spring or early summer. It also produces yellow-orange berries that are toxic if ingested, especially to pets and livestock. Despite this, the tree is often planted for its ornamental value, especially in urban areas, due to its ability to tolerate a variety of growing conditions, including drought and poor soil.

While it’s admired for its beauty, some people consider it invasive in certain regions because it can spread quickly and displace native plants. The wood is sometimes used for making furniture, and the tree is also known for its ability to provide shade.
